Hay rake table made of Oak by Furgus Parsons.
The hay rake table takes its name from the design of the
leg stretcher rails, which resemble the design of an old
fashioned hay rake head, which was used to gather up hay
in the meadow before mechanisation.
A gentleman by the name of Edward Barnsley introduced
this design into a table during the "Arts and Crafts"
period c.1880-1900. The detail has more recently been
used by various furniture makers including Peter Waals.
This is not just a visual nicety. It serves to strengthen
the legs in a mechanically sound fashion without
obstructing either the ends or sides of the table.
The table shown is made of English Oak, with the
exception of the inlay around the top which consists of
320 individual blocks of Sycamore and an African timber
called Wenge.
This close-up of the Oak Hay Rake table
shows both the inlay around the edge, and the degree of
detail on all the other components.
